I had a telephone training on WordPress with the company helping me with my website, and later that night I met with MK, my marketing media maven, and spent several hours learning about social media, i.e., HootSuite. WHAT WAS I THINKING? NOTE TO SELF: Never allocate more than one hour of a new technology learning session at a time. Though I’m not a ‘techy’ nor engineer, I am fairly savvy and highly analytical. As a non-expert, I actually view myself as the quintessential user, meaning that if I don’t understand how to use the technology, most of the public won’t. I guess in a way it’s my ‘claim to fame’ in the robotics industry, representing the ‘Stupid’ in the KISS theory (Keep It Simple, Stupid. I’m also known as a PEBCAC – the problem exists between the chair and the computer -i.e., the user).
Five hours of navigating these new tools just fried my brain. (I need a neural upgrade, please!!). I don’t know how people keep up with all this. Do they do it themselves? Do they hire experts? Am I the only that feels like I’m on a treadmill that is only increasing in speed and I will never be getting off to rest? I realize that the social media tools are not fun for me, but are merely tools, and perhaps it’s why I dread having to learn and update just when I got the hang of something. However, this is the way it is and going to be (until we have a direct brainlink to the internet) for most of us, so we need to focus on processes and procedures of learning, and not the knowledge itself which is constantly changing.
